Choreographer’s Statement:

This piece is choreographed by Valentyna and is an episode from the folk ballet Forest Song, written by the renowned Ukrainian writer and activist Lesya Ukrainka. In this scene, Mury — the feminine forest spirits of Ukrainian folklore — attempt to lure the old uncle Lev. These spirits are connected to the forest, playful yet mischievous, and protective of their natural realm.

Uncle Lev, wise in the ways of the forest and its trees, knows how to handle these magical beings. Using his knowledge of the woods and the help of plants, he is able to scare the spirits away, demonstrating the human connection and understanding of nature that is central to Ukrainian folklore.

This choreography brings to life the mystery, magic, and deep reverence for nature that are at the heart of Forest Song and Ukrainian cultural storytelling.
