A new play centering around the experiences of a Nigerian immigrant in Canada and a settler Canadian. Primarily informed by the artist’s experiences of immigrating to Canada after waiting for a decision for two years and five months, the play takes the audience through the psychological and emotional trauma faced by many immigrants before immigrating to, and while living in, Canada. This production is grateful for the support of Canada Council for the Arts.

RISER is supported by the Government of Canada, RBC Foundation, and a community of Senior Partners. RISER Regina is presented by On Cue Performance Hub & Why Not Theatre.

“As a Singaporean immigrant who relocated to Canada five years ago and as a staff member of an organization dedicated to supporting newcomers, Rites of Passage resonated deeply with me.  The play's portrayal of the immigrant experience and the challenges of adaptation struck a chord, reflecting my own journey in a new country. The exceptional storytelling and performances allowed me to connect with the characters on a personal level, evoking memories of leaving behind familiarity and embracing the unknown. In my role assisting newcomers, I highly value plays like Rites of Passage that foster empathy, dialogue, and contribute to building a more inclusive society.”

- Jiun Kheng Tay, Regina Immigrant Women Centre

“Rites of Passage hit all the marks for me as a marginalized newcomer in Canada. It spoke the unspeakable, struck my heart with both joy and pain, and left me with a heavy bag of emotions to process.

It is not only an entertaining, engaging and a masterfully-written play, but also a much needed representation in the local art space that every immigrant can relate to regardless of their diverse backgrounds, journeys and experiences. And even though I come from a different part of the world, I could relate to almost all the issues and the questions raised in the play.

I very much appreciated the folk tale, the coffee shop scene/setting, the voice of the other character, which added another dimension and beauty to the play, and the counter perspective. The actor, Babatunde, delivered an amazing performance despite acting without a fellow actor on stage. He managed to pull us in from the very first spotlight that hit the stage and kept us captivated the whole show.

I'm looking forward to see what Ibukun has in store for us in the future, and I'm hopeful to see more projects that are inclusive and representative to newcomers in Regina.”
