RECREATING COMMUNITY TOGETHER: BUILDING CULTURAL EQUITY
HAVE YOUR VOICE MATTER—HELP MAKE CHANGE
A series of consultations bringing together individuals from across arts and cultural communities to build a shared community more inclusive of our full cultural diversity by envisioning actions to strengthen inclusivity and equity. This is a continuation of the Arts for Change Conference hosted by the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance in April 2025 in partnership with the other Recreating Community Together organizations: Common Weal Community Arts, Dance Saskatchewan Inc, On Cue Performance Hub, Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan, Regina Region Local Immigration Partnership, Saskatchewan Arts Alliance. Saskatchewan Music Educators Association.
Most people would agree that the arts are a critical component of culture, but
· To what extent do individuals who engage in traditional creative practices feel that they are a part of the arts community in Saskatchewan?
· To what extent do they want to be included in the arts community?
· Do Indigenous and black artists and other artists of colour have the same opportunities, supports and resources that other Saskatchewan artists have to realize their authentic creative vision and share their own new work, voices, stories and perspectives with equally diverse audiences?
· Is it time for action on any of these questions, and if so, what action is called for and who needs to do it?
During the months of January, February and March 2026, SK Arts and the Recreating Community Together Partnership are inviting arts and cultural communities to not only reflect on these and other questions but also identify actions that will help to raise the bar regarding cultural equity in Saskatchewan.
SK Arts has implemented several programs to address some of these questions: the Indigenous Peoples Art & Artists Program, Share and Connect: Indigenous Community Arts and the Building Arts Equity (BAE) program which was introduced in 2024. Discussions will begin on January 20 with a review of the BAE program—what it has accomplished, what more needs to be accomplished and what type of action will move equity forward most effectively. Other artists, including those who have benefitted from the new Indigenous programming will be invited to broaden the conversation beyond the BAE program and SK Arts to contribute to the calls to action that will be the end product of this three-month consultation.
